Lehigh River rescuers search for rafters after organizers lose track of dozens

Water rescue crews from Lehigh and Northampton counties were dispatched at Monday evening to the rain-swollen Lehigh River after Lehighton officials reported several rafters were unaccounted for. The discovery of an empty raft at Bowmanstown about 6:40 p.m. raised fears that one person was missing. Officials then were informed the company that rented the rafts was not sure where nearly 150 rafters were. It’s possible everyone is safe but the search is necessary until every rafter is counted, an official said. “They said 200 rafters had gone out and only had 55 had returned,” a Carbon County dispatcher said about 8 p.m. “We’re trying to account for 150. So it’s a big thing happening right now. We’re trying to account for everybody.” Source
