Tesla driver, 48, dies as his car smashes into a motorway central reservation and explodes into flames ‘when its battery went into meltdown

A driver was killed when the battery of his Tesla electric car exploded when it crashed in southern Switzerland, the local fire brigade has claimed. The 48-year-German driver died when his car hit the barrier in the central reservation of the A2 motorway in the southern Swiss canton of Ticino, turned over and burst into flames. It is unclear whether the car was using Tesla's controversial autopilot system. In a statement on its Facebook page Ticino fire brigade said: 'The violent impact of Lithium-ion batteries could probably have caused a phenomenon called "thermal runaway", i.e. a rapid and unstoppable increase in temperature.'  Source
