Transfiguration
GOSPEL Matt. 17: 1-9At that time, Jesus taketh unto him Peter and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart: And he was transfigured before them. And his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow. And behold there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking with him. And Peter answering, said to Jesus: Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. And as he was yet speaking, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them. And lo a voice out of the cloud, saying: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye him." And the disciples hearing fell upon their face, and were very much afraid. And Jesus came and touched them: and said to them: "Arise, and fear not." And they lifting up their eyes, saw no one, but only Jesus.And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying: "Tell the vision to no man, till the Son of man be risen from the dead."
Saturday
While Christ was in his Transfiguration there came to a voice from heaven saying of him: This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased: hear him.
This voice was likewise heard over him when he was baptized of Saint John i the river Jordan.
Whereby is signified that before we can be transfigured in glory, after this life, we must have that purity and innocency of soul that we had when we where baptized for as the scripture saith nothing that is uncles or defiled shall enter into the kingdom of heaven if we are not sufficiently pruified here in this world, we must be in purgatory, Whereof that place taketh his name, every mans works shall be tried by fire as Saint Paul saith and purified if need be.
And as out of the baptism of Christ before his transfiguration we gather we must have our baptismal purity.
Again purifying our hearts by faith as Saint Peter saith before we can be transfigured in glory: So may we learn out of those words which were spoken of Christ both in his baptism, and transfiguration how to attain unto that perfect purity to wit by hearing Christ the beloved son of God, in whom he is well pleasing in hearing I say and in obeying him, for that is included in hearing, otherwise hearing were in vain, and in hearing him not only in his precepts, and commandmentts which bind under mortal sin: but in all other things that bind but under venial sin and in all his counsels of perfection and works of justice and satisfaction, for these be the things that bring our souls to that baptismal purity again that we need not to be purified by the fire of purgatory, without which well we may die in the state of salvation only by keeping the commandment or doing due penance if we break them, and so come to heaven at last; for so Christ told a certain man in the gospel
