President-elect Donald Trump tapped former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue for secretary of agriculture, the last appointee named to Trump's proposed Cabinet. “I am proud and honored to be joining President-elect Trump’s administration as his Secretary of Agriculture,” Perdue said in a statement released by the Trump transition team today. “Beginning as a simple Georgia farm boy, making sure Americans who make their livelihood in the agriculture industry are thriving is near and dear to my heart, and I’m going to champion the concerns of American agriculture and work tirelessly to solve the issues facing our farm families in this new role.” Perdue's nomination must be confirmed by the Republican-led Senate. Perdue, 70, who served as governor of Georgia from 2003 to 2011, worked on Trump's agricultural advisory committee during his presidential campaign. THIRD: 22 JANUARY GEORGIA TORNADO KILLS 16
At least 16 people have died over the last 48 hours due to tornadoes, as a violent system of storms continues to work its way across the Florida Panhandle and parts Georgia and Alabama. At least 12 people died and around two dozen were injured in Georgia from tornadoes early Sunday morning, following four tornado-related deaths that occurred in Mississippi on Saturday morning.Meanwhile, new tornado watches were issued this morning for the Panhandle of Florida and southern Alabama, and the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency has issued a state of emergency for the seven south central Georgia counties impacted by the storm. "The National Weather Service predicts a third wave of severe weather today, which may reach as far north as metro Atlanta. I urge all Georgians to exercise caution and vigilance in order to remain safe and prevent further loss of life or injuries," Gov. Nathan Deal said in a statement.
