Turkish journalists in clashes with bodyguards during Erdoğan’s US visit

Turkish journalists have accused Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s security detail of kicking, shoving and verbally abusing them on Thursday in an attempt to bar them from a Washington DC thinktank where the president was giving a speech. A source close to the event at the Brookings Institution told the Guardian that it was close to canceling the president’s appearance until the Turkish embassy intervened and persuaded the bodyguards to back down. The fracas in the heart of the US capital made for a rocky start for Erdoğan, who stands accused of cracking down on freedom of the press in Turkey, as he attends a nuclear security summit hosted by Barack Obama. Similar event took place in January this year, when a Turkish journalist Hasan Karakaya died of a massive heart attack while on a trip to Saudi Arabia with  Erdoğan:

RIYADH: A prominent Turkish journalist Hasan Karakaya, 58, who was accompanying President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his Saudi trip, died of a massive heart attack in the holy city of Madinah on Thursday. “His body was flown to Turkey by the Turkish president’s private aircraft later in the day,” said Yunus Demirer, Turkish ambassador, while speaking via phone from Madinah today. “Karakaya, editor-in chief of Turkish daily newspaper Yeni Akit, sustained the heart attack at the Madinah hotel where he was staying,” said Demirer, while offering his condolences to the bereaved family and friends. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has signalled another crackdown on freedom of speech with a threat to take legal action against anyone who insults him Speaking at the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington DC, Mr Erdoğan thanked those who "criticise" him but re-iterated his hard-line approach towards the Turkish media. He has come under international scrutiny following the imprisonment of a number of journalists and other leading opposition critics on "terrorism" charges.
