John Paul II the Great lacks discernment? According to George Weigel, the dead Roman pontiff John Paul II the Great was fooled and deceived by the monster Father Marcial Maciel. In Weigel's latest article found on the National Review Online web site titled: A John Paul II Beatification Catechism, Weigel claims that JPII the Great should not be held accountable for any of the evil doings of one of his priests, simply because the monster was so good at deception that the monster even fooled one of the greatest popes (if not the greatest) in the history of the Roman Catholic Church! Should anyone believe Weigel? No. Weigel apparently does not believe in the particular judgement, he does not believe in the general judgment to come, and I doubt Weigel believes in God. How could he? Does Weigel think that God does not know the truth about John Paul the Great and his relationship with the monster? Weigel must think that God does not know the heart of JPII. Weigel believes that if he continues to write article after article on the lie that JPII knew nothing of the crimes committed by the monster during his pontificate that the scandal will be buried deep. God does not enter the picture at all. For Weigel, his writings on the matter are better than the judgement of God. Listen to Weigel, not God. This must be the mindset of Weigel who continually writes excuses for all the world to see that the Great one lacked the ability to see through such a monster as Father Marcial Maciel. Weigel has done his job, he has deflected any criticism of the Great one. Weigel writes the excuses so that his little world of the new springtime is not disturbed. Weigel wants very much to believe the lie of the last forty years, so much so that he will lie to the public and to God and tell us the the Great Pope is innocent of wrongdoing. Weigel is a product of the age and obviously he is a demented fool who does not care one bit about the One True Faith, nor does he care about Truth. For men like Weigel they have too much invested in the big lie of their beloved Vatican II interpretation. Weigel lies to you and he lies to God. Well very soon Weigel and his demented ilk will be judged at their very own Particular Judgement that they deny and ignore. Come the General Judgment we will all get to finally see the true picture of John Paul II and his evil works

7. What are we to make of John Paul II and the sordid case of Father Marcial Maciel, founder of the Legionaries of Christ, a man whom the late pope supported and who turned out to have been a pathological personality?

As I wrote in The End and the Beginning, John Paul II was clearly deceived by Maciel, who was a master deceiver. The relevant questions here, in terms of John Paul II’s beatification and its judgment that he lived a life of heroic virtue, are whether John Paul II’s failure to see through Maciel’s deceptions was willful (i.e., he knew about Maciel’s perfidies and did nothing about the situation), or venal (i.e., he was “bought” by Maciel), or malicious (i.e., he knew that Maciel was a sociopathic fraud and didn’t care). There isn’t a shred of evidence that would sustain a positive answer to any of those questions. To even think that such could be the case is to utterly miss the character of the late pope.

To focus so much attention on Maciel at the time of John Paul II’s beatification, as if his case offered a privileged window into a 26-year pontificate that changed the history of the Church and the world, is rather like obsessing on the disastrous raid on Dieppe and the bombing of Dresden at Winston Churchill’s funeral. It’s grotesquely disproportionate, from any serious historical point of view.
