The ancient belief of a few Church Fathers held that the continuity of the Roman Empire would last until the end of time is based on this passage of Daniel:

But in the days of those kingdoms the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, and his kingdom shall not be delivered up to another people, and it shall break in pieces, and shall consume all these kingdoms, and itself shall stand for ever. According as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and broke in pieces, the clay, and the iron, and the brass, and the silver, and the gold, the great God hath shewn the king what shall come to pass hereafter, and the dream is true, and the interpretation thereof is faithful. Daniel 2:44-45

The stone was cut out of the mountain without hands: The Church Fathers and medieval defenders of the authority of the Roman Emperor use this passage to point out that the origin of the authority of the Roman Emperor is from the Blessed Trinity and it is not man made.

The God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed: This passage is self-evident and is used to show that man cannot destroy the Authority of the Roman Emperor. Man can hinder and ignore the Divinely Ordained Authority of the Roman Emperor but man can never destroy it because its source is directly from the Blessed Trinity with no man-made intermediary.

And his kingdom shall not be delivered up to another people: Simply put man cannot duplicate the Divinely Ordained Authority of the Holy Roman Emperor. Modern man can imitate the outward appearance of Imperial authority but it will fail miserably. Again this is self evident any one can see this, so I certainly do not have to prove this statement. I just have to point out the man made imitators of the Divinely Ordained Authority of the Holy Roman Emperor: United Nations, European Union, United States of America etc.. All of these Imperial entities are incapable of creating good laws and are therefore incapable of enforcing good laws. Again this is self-evident. So His kingdom, that is, the Authority of the Holy Roman Emperor will never be duplicated by men, that is, it shall not be delivered up to another people.

And broke in pieces, the clay, and the iron, and the brass, and the silver, and the gold: The Divinely Ordained Authority of the Holy Roman Emperor has dominion over all lesser forms of government. These lesser forms of government are man-made and are merely permitted and tolerated by the Blessed Trinity. All man-made governmental forms must submit to the Divinely Ordained Authority of the Holy Roman Emperor. This is confirmed by the words of the Blessed Trinity found in 1 kings 2:10 who gives empire or dominion over all the world to the Roman Emperor, (His King): The adversaries of the Lord shall fear him: and upon them shall he thunder in the heavens. The Lord shall judge the ends of the earth, and he shall give empire to his king, and shall exalt the horn of his Christ.
